About the Benefit
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a welfare benefit provided by the UK government’s Department for Work and Pensions that provides financial support to anyone who has a mental or physical disability. The tax-free, non-means tested benefit was introduced in 1991 but as of 2015 is being replaced by PIP, Personal Independence Payment. It is recommended that claimants get in touch if they are worried about the transfer to the new benefit scheme.
General Enquiries – 0345 850 3322
Contact the DWP on their general enquiries phone number for DLA claims 0345 850 3322 if you already receive the benefit and are concerned about the move to the PIP scheme. For instance, callers can ask whether they qualify for Personal Independence Payment as someone who has previously claimed Disability Living Allowance. Alternatively, if you are claiming Carer’s Allowance then you can use this number discuss to discuss your existing eligibility for the benefit if you are concerned that the person you are caring for will no longer receive welfare support under the new scheme.
However, claimants whose DLA award is due to end before September 2017 will be contacted via post asking if they want to claim PIP. Therefore, if you haven’t heard from the DWP by this time then you should call the above number as soon as possible to ensure that you receive your benefit entitlement. Alternatively, if your care or mobility needs have changed then it your responsibility to call the UK Department of Work and pensions with an updated account of your needs and circumstances.
PIP Claims – 0800 917 2222
Call the UK Department for Work and Pensions on their freephone contact number for new claims 0345 850 3322 if you would like to begin your PIP application over the phone. Both former DLA and new claimants should use this number to enquire about the eligibility criteria needed to make a successful application. It should be noted that the benefits are payable whether you have a job or are unemployed and that your allowance is not means tested but is assessed on the level of care that you require. You should also use this number to enquire about receiving DLA on behalf of a child who has a physical or mental disability. For instance, a child can claim for DWP or PIP if they are under 16 and needs more looking after than a child their age who doesn’t have a disability.
